LWDA, serving as mental health planners and architects in association with Edwards and Kelcey, Engineer for Review, master planned the reorganization of the ELMHC. The State of Massachusetts wanted to downsize the service from 200,000 to 86,600 SF as a part of the Department of Mental Health reorganization over a three-year implementation schedule. The master plan endeavored to right-size individual departments and increase operational efficiency.
The planned change included maintaining space for two forensic inpatient adult units, a forensic inpatient children unit, a school for adolescent patients (grades 9-12), a recreation area, a therapy activity room, dining facilities, an outpatient clinic, and an outpatient overnight shelter.
